The Burn that Didn't Scar

On the 1st of May 2017 I was travelling home from my daughters place and pulled up in the garage at Ballan in Victoria where I regularly stop on the return trip.  After filling the car with fuel, I was standing at the register waiting to pay for the purchase when I noticed water running from under the car.  Concerned I immediately checked the levels as I had about 300km to drive and had no idea as to where I could get the leak fixed.  Anyhow, I paid for the fuel and then went to inspect the damage and find this leak.  Well it was a leak alright, water was pouring out of a hose end or split that I couldn't see.  I moved the car to a parking bay and grabbed something for lunch, and after much deliberation checked the water level in the radiator and overflow bottle and to my amazement they were both still full, so I prayed and asked God to keep things safe for the journey and headed on out.  After an hour or so I stopped at Skipton where I usually did but could smell the radiator water on the exhaust so decided I should check it out.  I hesitated but was still determined to do it even though it was in God's hands I had this feeling that I should check the water level so I did.  I checked the overflow which was full and gently turned the radiator cap to release the pressure by rocking it back and forth but there was no noise, no hiss, and no nothing.

Immediately I thought that it was out of water so I turned the cap slowly to open it when WHOOSH! Boiling water exploded up and over the left side of my face and down my front as I was pulled backwards by unseen hands.  Immediately I walked to the back of the car and grabbed the spare bottle of water from the boot and soaked a towel, then quickly dabbed the burning area.  Stupid me didn't pour cold water over the area like you should and it was really burning by now.  I have a beard and that didn't help the situation either as it held the heat.   I should have leaned and poured the cold water straight onto my face.  I truly wasn't thinking straight.  Anyhow I filled the radiator back up with the bottle of anti-freeze which wasn't in it before, it was straight distilled water and it reeked...

After sorting out the car I jumped in and decided the best thing to do was get home and sort it out later.  I sat for a moment and prayed asking God to prevent my face from scarring and having to shave my beard off and break my vow by doing so.  (I had made a vow a year or so ago regarding my beard as not to shave it off even though I hate it but I have to keep my vow even more so to God.)  My face was still burning and my nostrils were filled with the stench of hot radiator water even after I cleaned up.  Travelling the highway home my face still burned and occasionally I would dab with the towel to try and cool it down to no avail, then I got a brainwave and directed the cool air with my hand directly onto my face.

Finally after a 3 and 1/2 hour drive I arrived home, red faced, sore and it still burned slightly but I remembered that God was dealing it so I had nothing to worry about.  So later that night I showered and the warm water burnt as well and then afterwards I decided to assess the damage and figure what I would do now.  I looked into the mirror at where I had presumed would be blisters and red roar skin with a slight swelling, but praise be to God and answering prayers.... It was only sore and my face and chest were just like they were before the accident... God stopped the burning and saved my vow and face...

Mysterious Illness

In January, Peter and I went with a group of about 30 to India for a short mission trip.   Two days after we arrived back, I developed a fever.  It would subside with Paracetamol, but the temperature would return once the tablets wore off.  This went on for two and a half weeks.
The family doctor suspected malaria.  He ordered a number of tests but they all came back negative.  A course of antibiotics did not help.    We had taken anti-malarial tablets before and during the trip.  We used insect repellent while over there.  And with the negative malaria screen, it was a mystery as to what the disease could be.   Peter talked to Dr Sharma, a physician who came from India.  She and her family came to our last Recipe Club meeting in November.  Dr Sharma suggested that I take the malaria treatment anyway, even though the blood tests did not indicate malaria.   After two and a half weeks of fever and tiredness, I was willing to give it a try.   Within 24 hours of taking the medicine she recommended, the fever left.  Gradually, my energy level also returned. I thank God for His healing.

 The Hand Of God

On Sunday night at around 10:30pm, February 19th. 2012, I received a phone call from my son-in-law, informing me that they had been in an accident on their way to Melbourne just out of Dunkeld and that the car was on its roof.  I already knew that an accident was imminent, but was shocked to receive the news of it coming to pass that very day.  Later that night Andrew, my son-in-law, informed me of the frightening details and that’s when I knew for sure that the hand of God was protecting them.

It was dark and my daughter Keryn on “L” plates, (learner’s permit) was driving at night for the first time.  Andrew wanted her to gain some experience of night driving, but the oncoming lights of the traffic on this busy highway dazzled her continually and she would move to the left side of the road  as a safety precaution, causing her to stress a little.  She asked Andrew for a smoke of which he lit one and placed it in the ashtray for her.

For that brief moment, Keryn took her eyes off the road and the 4x4 she was driving was on a collision course with a telegraph pole.    Andrew brought the pole to Keryn’s attention and in a panic, her foot on the throttle, she reefed the steering wheel to avoid a collision and swung out and across the highway.  (All of the traffic had disappeared)  In a frantic bid to bring the 4x4 back under control she pulled on the steering wheel again and again sending the car in a wave back and forth across the highway.

Travelling at 90km per hour, the front right-hand tyre finally gave out and folded under the pressure forcing the 4x4 onto its side and sliding down the highway spraying sparks and glass behind them.  Finally it came to rest on the side of the highway on its roof with Keryn, Andrew and Sousuke, their 3 year old, hanging upside-down in their seats.    Amazingly enough, the only window on the driver’s side that wasn’t broken was Sousuke’s.

After the incident the traffic had returned to normal and the CFA (or SES) happened to be passing by and checked the 4x4 for fuel leaks and secured the area.  The fuel tank was full but did not leak at all, even while the vehicle lay upside down.     Three or four other drivers had stopped to offer assistance and phoned the police, the ambulance and RACV/Towing.  A hot cup of Chi Tea Latte was sprayed across them but none were scolded.  The damage done to the vehicle wrote it off.

They walked away from the incident without a scratch but we know that God was with them the whole time even if they still deny it…   Their other four children (my grandchildren) were staying with me for the week and we had our first family prayer that night asking for protection over us all.    Thankyou Jesus for your divine intervention… Amen.
