Word Definitions

FEAR
As an extra note you may be wondering how the word "FEAR" is actually used in the scriptures.  Immediately one is pertained to accept it as meaning "to be afraid of... or  to fear something."  How far from the truth this is.

Never be afraid of God, for it is our sinful natures and acts that make us afraid of or fear Him in the natural sense of the word.

The word fear that is used so many times in the scriptures actually has a different meaning each time it is used, and does not necessarily mean to be afraid of at all, as in most cases it is literally taken.

For example in the following scripture passages the word fear is possibly translated like this.

"Fear God and give glory to Him . . . . " - would translate to  - "Become a son or daughter (child) with filial regard mingled with awe of God and give glory to Him. . . ."

"to perfect holiness in His fear . . . ." - would translate to  -  "to perfect holiness in His reverence . . . ."

According to the English dictionary -

FEAR = Painful emotion excited by apprehension of impending danger or dread or the object of fear or filial regard mingled with awe or reverence.

FILIAL = pertaining to or becoming a son or daughter.

see. Exodus 20 verse 20 pertaining to the above examples.

MEDITATE
So many times we as a people are told to meditate on the scriptures, meditate in prayer, meditate on what we have learned or meditate on a chapter or verse that we have read.

So HOW do we meditate?

Certainly we do not sit and cross our legs in silence, focus and hum a solitary note over and over again for an hour or two.

To meditate on a chapter or verse for example simply means to focus on that chapter or verse and go over it in your mind or discuss it with God out loud.  Perhaps share and discuss what you have learned with a friend or fellow member of the church and to sit quietly or kneel in silence allowing the Holy Spirit to enlighten us as we ponder over the Word of God.

According to the English dictionary -

MEDITATE = To dwell on anything in thought; or to cogitate; or to think on; or to scheme; or to intend.

MEDITATION = Act of meditating; or serious contemplation.
