The Layman and His Bible
The New Commandment
The aim of this study is to show that the
"new" commandment
is really very old.
Throughout the study passages below, you will
notice words highlighted in lilac,
or bold or Italic.
When the text is LILAC move your mouse
over the word or words for a detailed description of what to do
with the text in your Bibles.
Some of the passages are written in red text.
These red text passages are
the words of Jesus.
Please open your Bible. Read and mark the passages
accordingly as you study God's Word.
The page Titles are the subject topics. For example "The
Scriptures" is the topic of lesson one.
Write out a reference sheet to the topical verses and keep it with
your Bible for future reference.
Lesson 25 of 29
John 14:15
15If ye love me, keep my
commandments.
John 13:34
34A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye
also love one another.
Leviticus 19:18
18 Thou shalt not
avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy
people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I
am the LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:5
5 And thou shalt love
the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy might.
Mark 12:30, 31
30And thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is
the first commandment.
31And the second is
like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment
greater than these.
10 Love worketh no ill
to his neighbour: therefore love
is the fulfilling of the law.
Matthew 22:36-40
36 Master, which
is the great commandment in
the law?
37 Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy mind.
38This is the first and great
commandment.
39And the secondis
like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40On these two commandments hang all
the law and the prophets.
**We must conclude that Jesus was referring
to the fact that the new commandment
was new to His hearers because they had been taught something
different.
